Celebrating 45 years of powering our fleet with propane

Feb. 8, 2019 — Most people have seen our Inca Gold® Schwan’s Home Service delivery trucks rolling through their neighborhoods, but here’s a little known fact: 66 percent of them run on propane.

This year marks the 45th anniversary since Schwan’s began its journey with propane. The company first pursued propane powered trucks in early 1970s, when the country was experiencing gasoline embargoes. Company leaders originally saw propane as way to ensure a reliable and affordable fuel source.

Over time, we’ve learned of many benefits of propane use. Here are a few:

  • Propane burns more cleanly than traditional fossil fuels, reducing our environmental impact. In 2018, the use of propane rather than diesel enabled us to avoid the emission of more than 10,291 tons of greenhouse gases.
  • Propane is typically less expensive than gasoline or diesel.
  • Using propane extends the life of our engine and has less wear on engine components than gasoline.
  • We can buy propane in bulk and fuel our own trucks at our facilities.

Moving forward, we will continue to use propane in our trucks. We announced in 2017 that we secured a vendor that can enable propane use in a majority of the new trucks entering our fleet.
