Happy National Ice Cream Month!

July 1, 2016 — July may very well be one of our favorite times of year at The Schwan Food Company as the entire month is dedicated to one of our favorite treats — ice cream! For 31-consecutive days we get to celebrate a food that our company was founded on 64 years ago, when founder Marvin Schwan packed his Dodge panel van with 14 gallons of his family’s signature ice cream and set out to deliver it to families in western Minnesota.

According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), National Ice Cream Month was started in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation’s population. In addition, Reagan named the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day.

To meet the demand for one of America's favorite desserts, IDFA estimates that 10.3 percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.
